CHICAGO — A 23-year-old Elgin man has been charged in connection to the shooting of a Chicago police officer on the city's North Side Monday, officials announced. Jovan McPherson is facing felony charges of attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery of a peace officer, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest, unlawful restraint and kidnapping. The kidnapping charge comes from McPherson restraining a 21-year-old woman just before shots were fired, police said. According to officials, McPherson was arrested Monday immediately after the officer was shot at around 3:30 p.m. Police Superintendent David Brown said the officer was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in "non-life-threatening" condition with a through and through gunshot wound to "the face area." Officials told Patch the officer was released from the hospital at around 7 p.m. Monday. "This began over an altercation inside the Ulta Beauty store," Brown said at a news conference. Brown said a person in the store called police after seeing someone acting erratic. The person struggled with the officer and eventually the fight extended into the parking lot, where police said the person fired three shots at the officer, hitting him once. According to police, a second officer was able to respond to the scene quickly due to increased patrol in the area. Burglaries and other incidents were the cause for extra patrols, Brown said. Police said the shooting occurred at a shopping center at North and Sheffield avenues. McPherson is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
