You remind me of my dad.
His grandfather was complete jerk by every single family account I’ve heard— the worst in the entire family, except by my dad. They say he beat his kids with a stick, if they didn’t cry enough he’d get a bigger one. Said he was a Bible fanatic, kept his wife in the house and spanked her occasionally as well (not a sexy spanking, beat as in wife beater T-shirt whipping). Wouldn’t even let them read fiction or watch movies. Raised a slew of kids about 1/3 of them were alcoholics and another 1/3 didn’t finish school—but they went to church all right.. Never could understand it.
Then I found out the mystery, my aunt said he took a special liking to my Dad when he was about 5 and treated him nicely when he was little. Even carried him around on his soldiers, gave him candy etc So of course now he is biased and still won’t say a bad thing about him even though he died 40 years ago or more.
