After the Civil War, the Republican party was the force that pressed the Federal Government to enforce reconstruction policies and support the rights of newly freed Black people in the south. Northern Democrats were for the most part, inclined towards compromise. Willing to show mercy towards Confederate leaders and former slave holders. Southern Democrats were the ones who actively worked to create Jim Crow laws and the K.K.K
