He began his career at the Buffalo Courier-Express in 1976 and was the sports columnist there when it folded in 1982. By chance, USA Today opened the same week that the Courier closed — and he joined the national newspaper as an enterprise reporter in the sports department, a job he held for more than 36 years. He retired in 2019 as the last member of USA Today’s founding generation and has since been writing for The News. Brady and his wife, Carol Stevens, live in Arlington, Va.
