Description

This tour will explore the design and historical context of the works of Aymar Embury II in the North Carolina Sandhills. Embury was a prominent New York architect known for his country houses and country clubs of the early to mid-twentieth century, as well as bridges and other public works in New York City. Family and social connections brought him to North Carolina where he created a distinctive body of work that helped define the unique architectural character of the Sand Hills resort communities, especially Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Leading the tour is ICAA-NC past president, Jim Collins, AIA and Ray Moore from the Arts Council of Moore County. It will include the Boyd House at the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities, Highland Pines Cottage & Mid Pines Country Club. The tour will meet at the Boyd House and self drive to the remaining sites, so carpooling is encouraged. Participation is limited and lunch is included. This event is cosponsored by the Arts Council of Moore County and the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities, with support from the Wells Fargo Foundation and The Winston-Salem Foundation. Additional vent sponsors include Jeff Allen Landscape Architecture. LLC, Classic Construction and Creative Pools.
