Our favorite Gullah Chef is back with stories, great food, and history all in one evening! Chef Matthew Raiford is back in the upstate for another Gullah Geechee cooking class. Chef will be demonstrating recipes from his newly released book while he tells tales of the land and his families connection to it. In his recently published cookbook, BRESS 'n' NYAM: GULLAH GEECHEE RECIPES FROM A SIXTH-GENERATION FARMER there are more than 100 heirloom recipes from a dynamic chef and farmer working the lands of his great-great-great grandfather. From Hot Buttermilk Biscuits and Sweet Potato Pie to SALMON Cakes on Pepper Rice and Gullah Fish Stew, Gullah Geechee food is an essential cuisine of American history. It is the culinary representation of the ocean, rivers, and rich fertile loam in and around the coastal South. From the Carolinas to Georgia and Florida, this is where descendants of enslaved Africans came together to make extraordinary food, speaking the African Creole language called Gullah. In this cooking class Chef will prepare a meal of: Whole Hog Roast (hog raised and cooked by Chef himself) w/ coastal Georgia Low Country Boil (with all the sides & fixins) Olive Oil Grits, Grilled Potato Salad, Sea Island Red Peas Reezy Peezy, Mess O Greens, and Sweet Potato Pone. Chef will share with us the importance of utilizing your local ranchers and farmers as he shares stories with you about how he and others are preserving the Gullah Geechee way of life by growing their own crops, raising livestock, and living off the land. You will have a front seat at the Chef's table for this meet and greet class as Matthew shares some recipes and dishes that have been circulating for many generations of the Gullah Geechee people. He will review with you how to cook a whole pig, along with the A full meal will be served at the end of the class. Two glasses of wine are served along with other beverages. You will receive 20% off your purchases and will have 30 minutes after the class to do any shopping. The recipe book will be available for purchase along with the opportunity to have book signed by Chef Matthew.
