FREEPORT, NY — Election Day is fast approaching and Patch is giving you a look at the candidates on the Nov. 2 ballot. Nassau County's 5th Legislative District features incumbent Democrat Debra Mule challenged by Brian McEvoy. The 5th L.D. includes parts of South Hempstead, Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor and Freeport. Patch asked Mule where she stands on important issues affecting the community. Here are her responses. Debra S. Mulé Age (as of Election Day) 59 Position Sought Nassau County Legislator (LD 5) Party Affiliation Democratic, Common Sense Family Husband, Steve Mulé; Daughters - Victoria, 27; and Elizabeth, 26 Does anyone in your family work in politics or government? No Education B.A., Music - College of William & Mary; MSW, Virginia Commonwealth University Occupation Legislator Previous or Current Elected or Appointed Office Nassau County Legislature (LD 5), elected Campaign website https://www.facebook.com/debra... Why are you seeking elective office? Whether serving on the school board, village board, or now on the Legislature, I have always loved advocating for my constituents and working hard to shepherd projects through to completion. I am seeking re-election so that I can continue to represent the diverse constituency of the Fifth Legislative District to the best of my ability and be their voice in Nassau County government. The single most pressing issue facing our (board, district, etc.) is _______, and this is what I intend to do about it. Baldwin Downtown Revitalization. Baldwin's downtown revitalization continues to be the top issue I am focused upon tackling in the Fifth Legislative District. The County's contribution to this effort – Complete Streets – will be starting by the end of the year. This investment in our infrastructure promises to provide for a safe, walkable and revitalized downtown and serve as a catalyst for further smart, transit-oriented development. What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post? As a Legislator, a former Freeport Village Board member and a former President of the Freeport Board of Education, I have gained extensive experience in budgeting, collective bargaining and completing vital infrastructure projects that will continue to serve my constituents well in a new term. How do you think local officials performed in responding to the coronavirus? What if anything would you have done differently? I have worked closely with the administration of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to get residents vaccinated, connect constituents with relief resources, and stabilize County finances by restructuring debt amidst a sharp decline in sales tax revenues. Her administration has done an outstanding job at informing the public, providing residents access to health care resources and vaccinations, and delivering crucial financial resources to help residents and small business owners throughout the duration of this crisis. Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform. Increasing government transparency; investing in our infrastructure; excellent constituent services; environmental conservation and preservation initiatives What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job? During my tenure as a Legislator, I made it a priority to solve some of our district's most persistent problems. For instance, the residents of South Hempstead had been plagued for more than 60 years by flooding on Long Beach Road beneath the Southern State Parkway overpass. This often required the Fire Department to rescue stranded motorists. Upon becoming a Legislator, I made it a top priority to resolve this issue. This summer, the County completed the necessary improvements to at long last address this flooding issue. The best advice ever shared with me was: Don't take things personally. What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
