ROUND ROCK, TX — Former Round Rock Assistant Police Chief Jim Stuart has been named the interim chief in Hutto while a national search is conducted for a long-term replacement takes place, city officials announced last week. Stuart served as Round Rock's police chief for nearly 33 years after beginning his law enforcement career with the University of Texas police department. Stuart retired earlier this year as assistant chief and plans to return to retirement once a full-time chief in Hutto is appointed, the city said in a news release. During his career in Round Rock, Stuart led the criminal investigations unit, and also served with the patrol division, training division and SWAT team. Stuart, Assistant Hutto Police Chief Cody Cazalas, and City Manager Warren Hutmacher met with all Hutto police officers last week, city officials said. Stuart told officers that when he began serving with Round Rock police department, the city was about the same population Hutto is today. Since then, Round Rock quadrupled in size, which provides Stuart with a great perspective on the rapid growth Hutto is experiencing. The City of Hutto has begun the process of selecting a firm to lead a nation-wide recruiting process for the next long-term chief, the city said. Stuart is expected to stay in the interim role for the next several months.
