Welcome back, Laurel! Here's everything you need to know to get this Tuesday started off right. First, today's weather: Plenty of sunshine. High: 69 Low: 49. Here are the top four stories today in Laurel: Mayor Craig A. Moe has announced that Trick-or-Treating in the City of Laurel will occur on Oct. 31, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in accordance with all CDC and Prince George's County Health Department Guidelines. Residents who plan on handing out candy must turn on their porch lights for the trick-or-treaters. (City of Laurel)Last week, Prince George's County Council disagreed on a redistricting proposal that had been crafted by an independent commission. By a vote of 6-4, lawmakers approved a broad set of changes at a tense online session that included protests from lawmakers who claimed the alterations were created in secret and sprung on them at the last moment. Council member Derrick Leon Davis defended the changes. He said they achieved twin objectives — the uniting of municipalities and the creation of a majority Latino district. (MarylandMatters.org)Governor Larry Hogan recently announced on that, according to official CDC data, the State of Maryland has reached the milestone of vaccinating more than 85% of adults with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Maryland is outpacing the national rate of 78.9% of adults with at least one dose. Gov. Hogan said thanks to "the millions of Marylanders who have rolled up their sleeves over the past 10 months." (Maryland.gov)Every morning, when her five daughters were growing up, LaTonya Williams would greet them with these words: Hello, beautiful. Williams began building her daughters' self-esteem when they were children because she knew the rest of the world would not. While teaching her daughters about their worth and self-esteem, she also found herself mentoring women at her job. These events led her to create the Hello Beautiful Conference, an organization that promotes body positivity for women of color.
