Description

PLAINFIELD, IL — One person suffered burn injuries and a second person was taken to the hospital with chest pain Friday afternoon after multiple buses at a facility in the 22000 block of 143rd Street caught fire. Plainfield fire officials said a worker was under the buses doing salvage work when the fire started. Several bystanders pulled the man, who suffered burn injuries, from underneath the bus before firefighters arrived. He was in critical condition. A second person was taken to a nearby hospital in fair condition after suffering chest pains during the incident. Seven buses that were undergoing salvage operations caught fire, the Plainfield Fire Protection District said. Since the area has no fire hydrants, fire officials said a "tender operation" was set up to bring water to the scene to extinguish the fire. The blaze was under control within 30 minutes, the fire department said. 143rd Street was shut down for about an hour as firefighters worked to put out the blaze, creating traffic backups Friday afternoon. Plainfield police and the Will County Sheriff's Office assisted Plainfield firefighters at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
