Description

Press release from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh : October 17, 2021 After years of being served by a bookmobile, Beechview community members campaigned for a more permanent location by writing letters to their local representatives and the director of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Their campaign was successful when a new Beechview branch was approved to be built in 1965. The site of CLP-Beechview was originally home to Beth El Synagogue (built in 1927, now located in Scott Township) and was sold to the City of Pittsburgh for $35,000. Located on the main thoroughfare of Broadway Avenue, right on the trolley line, Mayor Joseph M. Barr said at the time that the site would be "centrally situated for approximately 20,000 persons, including 3,000 pupils attending Beechwood, Lee and Banksville elementary schools and St. Catherine's parochial school." The new branch opened to the public in June 1967 and has been an important part of this steep-hilled community ever since. While the physical building has seen a lot of changes over the years, the dedication of the Beechview neighborhood to its Library has been constant and strong. To commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the Library wants to hear about how the Beechview Branch has been a part of your life. Stop by on October 19th to share a memory of CLP-Beechview and celebrate its history. This press release was produced by Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The views expressed are the author's own.
