$7.5M New Activity Center To Open In Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — Douglas County will finally celebrate the completion of its brand-new, 30,000-square-foot multipurpose center with a ribbon cutting this Friday, county officials announced last week, and the public is invited. The new $7.5 million center, called Boundary Waters Activity Center, is located at 4996 Highway 92/Highway 166 — next to the Boundary Waters Aquatic Center — and was the most prominent building project in the voter-approved 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program. "As Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, I'm very pleased with our commitment to making necessary improvements and updates to our parks in Douglas County," Douglas County Commission Chair Romona Jackson Jones said in a news release. "I want to thank the citizens for their commitment through their SPLOST dollars and to trust us with building this magnificent facility. I commend Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Henry Mitchell III and Parks and Recreation Director Gary Dukes for their efforts." It's also the completion of the county's 20-year dream to craft a 500-acre, eight-park mega-complex along the Chattahoochee River, according to Douglas County Commissioner Kelly Robinson. The new center features two full-size regulation basketball courts, an exercise room, weight room, multipurpose room and an elevated running track, among other amenities. "This complex has basketball, swimming, football, soccer, baseball, nature trails, estuary trails and disc golf. Simply, it is a place where families can have all their diverse recreational needs met in one location," she said in a news release. The county is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, featuring Mike "Stinger" Glenn, a 10-year National Basketball Association and television veteran, as the master of ceremony.
