The Lab Technician is a full time employee who performs analyses and/or preps of samples using standard analytical techniques in compliance with NWDLS’ Quality Assurance programs and SOP’s. This full time, entry level position requires shift work and placement into a rotating weekend schedule. Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Performs routine lab tasks that provide experience and familiarization with methods, practices, and programs including: o Batching and prepping samples using standard techniques for analysis o Performing analysis using standard techniques o Making reagents for sample analysis o Preparing appropriate standards to ensure compliant data o Conforming to lab QA/QC practices • Responsible for general housekeeping in his/her work area. • Works under close supervision using routine and standard methods. • Accurate, timely, and complete analysis must be provided on all samples to ensure data quality and to maintain positive client relations. • Assists in other areas of the laboratory when needed and have the ability to become trained and competent on complex instrumentation including any but not limited to gas chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, ICP, and instrument specific data systems. Desired Skills and Experience Requirements • Education o Seeking BS/BA degree in chemistry or biology related field desired. • Experience o Laboratory experience helpful. o Previous production-oriented work helpful (awareness and ability to meet deadlines). • Knowledge o Analytical and/or General Science o Knowledge of laboratory procedures o Skilled with computers and laboratory software o Laboratory safety rules and chemical hazards • Skills o Problem solving skills o Team participation and meeting management skills o Good communication skills o Time management and organizational skills • Abilities o Complete work within time and quality constraints o Work independently following written and verbal instructions o Ability to prioritize o Multi-tasking Physical Requirements • Vision sufficient to read and interpret chemical and reagent labels, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, laws, spreadsheets, computer screens and print outs, business correspondence, and other documents encountered in the course of work. • Hearing sufficient to hear conversation levels in person and telephone. • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in front of groups, over the telephone, in meetings, and training sessions. • Mobility sufficient to safely move in an environmental laboratory. • Dexterity sufficient to safely operate office equipment including computers and specialized tools and equipment utilized in the course of work. • Strength sufficient to safely lift and carry sample containers, office supplies, materials, equipment, and other related materials weighing up to 30 pounds. • Endurance sufficient to stand and bend from the waist for longs periods; maintain efficiency throughout entire shift. Work Environment • Primarily in a climate-controlled office setting within the laboratory. • Involves exposure to odors, fumes, hazardous chemicals, and acids requiring the use of safety glasses, aprons, gloves, face shields, and a fume hood. • Work may involve working evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
