ABOUT THE WORKSHOP The Critical Response Process (CRP or "the Process") has the singular purpose of helping the Artist solve her own dilemmas, so that she can continue on her own unique path of creating her artwork. In this setting, Responders ask questions of the Artist, rather than offer solutions. This promotes the important element of creative inquiry, which can sometimes be given short shrift, or even ignored altogether. As the Artist communicates her question about her work to the Responders learn to ask thoughful, probing questions to help her answer it for herself. This is one instance wherein it is entirely appropriate to answer a question with another question! CRP requires a group to participate in three roles: that of Artist, Facilitator and Responders. The Artist presents a portion of a work in progress, and asks the Responders for feedback on a particular issue. The group proceeds through a series of steps that are intended to help the artist resolve her own dilemmas. ABOUT THE PROCESS The Critical Response Process was developed by dancer/choreographer, Liz Lerman, to support her dancers at the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange as they choreographed their own dance works. It grew out of a need for artists to feel safe and comfortable in the giving and receiving of artistic feedback. Up until then, Ms. Lerman felt that feedback was given with very little thought, sometimes with negative undertones, and sometimes completely unrelated to what the artists themselves were questioning about their work. The Process is a ground-breaking method that nurtures artists as they share their work through a four-step, facilitated dialogue between the Artist and Responders, who can be peers or a more generalized group. In this structure, feedback is given to the artist as the Facilitator ensures an ordered, non-threatening and caring environment. For more than 30 years, the Process has been used internationally by artists and arts educators of all disciplines. The Process deepens dialogue between artists and audiences, enhances learning between teachers and students, and affirms all participants in their search for artistic meaning. ABOUT SUSAN SCHWARZ, CRP FACILITATOR AND WORKSHOP PRESENTER Susan Millard Schwarz, a professional classical singer, arts administrator and entrepreneur, has enjoyed a multi-faceted career in the arts for 30+ years. In her former position with the Ohio Arts Council, she had her first encounter with Liz Lerman’s extraordinary work with artists using her Critical Response Process. Profoundly inspired, Susan determined to become skilled as a Facilitator. Since then, Susan has facilitated CRP workshops for: Ohio Alliance for Arts Education; VSA Ohio (now Arts Possible Ohio); Greater Columbus Arts Council; Arts & College Preparatory Academy (teacher in-service); Kenyon College voice studio; Opera Columbus Young Artist Program; and other entities. Susan believes that musical artists -- especially those who have been formally trained -- can benefit tremendously from this powerful work. In her 16 years of facilitating CRP, she has witnessed emotional break-throughs, as artists and responders found new freedom and acceptance for their creative selves, sometimes after many years of painful and restrictive thinking about their artistic work.
