Description
Kam provides students of all ages the benefits of a fitness and music class combined. An all levels West African Drum class that allows beginners to learn the history behind the drum, the basics of rhythm and technique and more experienced players to learn the accompaniments, solos, as well as the whole djembe orchestra. Each class is tailored to the skill level of the students attending. The class is taught by Kam Kelly who has been drumming for over 25 years. He has studied with such teachers as M’Bemba Bangoura, Youssouf Kumbassa, Osei and Yao Ababio and Gene Osborne. Kam has traveled to Guinea to continue to study and learn more about music and culture. “I believe that everybody can benefit from participating in some version of the arts and should have access to do so.” - Kamiruri Kelly Treat yourself to something new and step out of your comfort zone. Please bring your own drum. If you do not have your own drum you may rent one. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Chairs will be provided. Social distancing and mask are required. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram at The DAY Program See you soon. The DAY Program Explore the heart of all West African musical traditions: the drum. Learn to play the many parts of djembe, doundoun, songbas and kenkenes with Kam Kelly, life-long drummer, drum-maker and repairer. Kam's wealth of knowledge demonstrates the fascinating patterns of African drumming. Kamiruri Kelly (AKA “Kam”) began drumming, dancing, acting and studying martial arts since the age of 9 . At age 16, Kam was the innocent victim of gun violence which left him paralyzed. Determined to make the best of his situation, Kam returned to Indoda Entsha and taught himself how to drum comfortably from his wheelchair, using this form of creative expression as a healing mechanism. For 25+ years now, Kam has worked with the youth, senior citizens and the disabled: teaching, motivating, inspiring and giving hope to all his students. Kam is committed to enhancing the lives of both the disabled and spinal cord injured communities through Artz, education, advocacy and awareness and to promoting health and wellness while seeking innovative ways and means to build pro-disability infrastructure. The DAY Program We are committed to sharing the wisdom of yoga and the culture of the drum authentically in a safe and nurturing atmosphere in order to bring greater health, happiness and well-being into the lives of those in our community. We strive to impart this knowledge in the spirit of healing, love, transformation, and service. We share a vision of higher states of consciousness and embrace the path of self-realization.
