This immersion case study will focus on how the hearty yet versatile Syrah grape shows in various regions around the world. Pop culture has seemingly lost interest in this forlorn grape in recent years, but to seasoned wine professionals, and to those enthusiasts in-the-know, it’s still a powerful secret weapon. Nearly four decades of cheap Australian Shiraz flooding our markets has inspired many wine critics and consumers alike to run for the hills, and for good reason, but that's not what we're studying here. Through a mixed-case of 12 premium expressions of Syrah, this case-study will focus on the resurgence of the grape, examining classic expressions against more modern examples. Yes, the majestic expressions from the French Appellations of Cornas, Hermitage, and Cote Rotie will all be explored, but then compared to new World interpretations in varying degrees of ripeness from California, and to even cooler climate expressions from New Zealand. We may throw in some South African or Chilean examples if we find any which are useful to the lesson, but only the good stuff. No cheap Shiraz here. (Maybe Grange) This ancient and majestic grape may not be what you think it is, and if you think you don't like Syrah, this class will change your mind. This program is hosted by The Somm School in association with Michael La Vardera. Michael has spent the last 22 years in the wine industry has served progressively increasing roles as Sommelier for NYC restaurants, Beverage Director, and ultimately Corporate Beverage Director for multiple-unit, multi-State restaurant groups.
