Cochise Foundation Presents 12+ Cochise Cochise “My voice is my instrument,” Cochise says. “I’m no longer trying to be an artist; I’m trying to be a trumpet on the beat and solo for two minutes. We’re reaching a whole different frequency with the music and production. It isn’t just about lyrics. It’s about the cadence of the sound. It’s about how your voice alternates. It’s about how the beat is dancing up and down. It’s about what you say and also how you say it. To me, this isn’t homework. You finish homework in a day. This is a science project you need to spend a couple of days on.”Given this attention to detail and commitment to subverting expectations, the Florida rapper, producer, and artist immediately separate himself from the pack. Instead of simply alternating bars and hooks over beats, his vocals are more like a jazz solo—they’re controlled and chaotic all at once. Remaining unpredictable, he fuses trap, dancehall, and anime with the intensity of a car crash. After racking up over 100 million streams and 30 million views and receiving acclaim from The Source, Genius, HotNewHipHop, and more, he consistently surprises on a series of 2021 singles and his forthcoming full-length debut album, Benbow Crescent[Columbia Records]. Introducing his genre-and culture-bending style, he independently dropped a pair of EPs—Pulp [2018] and Hijack [2019]—and served up anthems such as “Dig Me Freestyle,” generating millions of streams and view sin the process. He immediately stood out by referencing everyone from hip-hop godfather DJ Kool Herc and controversial Jamaican maverick Tommy Lee Sparta (“The way he manipulated his voice was ridiculous!”) to Dragon Ball Zand Naruto. However, Cochisebroke through with “Hatchback” during 2020. It distilled his Jamaican heritage, love for anime, lifelong obsession with Slick Rick and Busta Rhymes, and passion for dancehall vocal acrobatics into the rare outlier anthem that makes a dent in the mainstream. It featured prominently in Tik Tok videos by the likes of Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae and eventually amassed 65 million Spotify streams and 11 million YouTube views. Signing to Columbia Records, he maintained his momentum with “Lost It.” Of the latter, The Source praised, “The rising Palm Bay rapper shows off sonic diversity with his latest head-knocking banger.”On its heels, “Knicks” posted up another 6.5 million Spotify streams in a few months’time. However, he reaches a new level altogether on his single “Sanji.” Named after the One Piece anime character, glassy keys glow through skittering hi-hats. Cochise alternates between rapid verses and a wonderfully woozy melodic refrain underscored by a subtle island bounce produced by his cousin Lousho.“The up-tempo beat reminded me of fast fighting, and the first person I thought about was Sanji, because he’s kicking and breakdancing,” he explains. “It gave me the vibe of an intense high-speed bank robbery. We wanted to do so much in a small space. It’s about the character, but it’s also about real life. Everything in there is straight facts.”Sharing its name with a street in Kingston, Benbow Crescentsees Cochise leap forward as he celebrates where he came from.“I’m going back to my Jamaican roots,” he states. “We used to go to Jamaica every other year when I was a kid. I have a huge family in there. My cousins really put me on to mad music. Jamaica got me to where I am today.”In the end, Cochise might just encourage you to flip the script too. “When you listen to me, I want you to know you can do what you want to do,” he leaves off. “You can talk about what you want to talk about. You don’t have to be somebody you’re not. There are too many followers, but we all have the capability to be leaders. Cochise Pre-game with $3.50 drinks for the first hour after doors!
