Board of Selectmen Name Change Committee Seeks Community Input The Medfield Board of Selectmen recently created the "Board of Selectmen Name Change Committee" which is an advisory committee charged with "determining if the Town should vote to approve a charter amendment that changes the name of the Medfield Board of Selectmen to reflect the changing use of language." According to the Massachusetts Municipal Association, the Massachusetts Selectmen's Association changed its name in 2020 to the 'Select Board Association' to "reflect a movement among towns to adopt a gender-neutral name for their elected policy board." The Medfield committee is recommending a local change to "Select Board" and is surveying the community to gauge its interest in the change. The survey asks, "How do you feel about changing the current name of the Board of Selectmen to the 'Select Board'?" There is also a text box for additional feedback. The survey is anonymous and can be found at HERE. The public is encouraged to take the survey through Nov. 1. "The language we choose to represent Medfield is important, and it is vital that we all feel represented in our town," says committee member Julie Maviglia. "Changing the name of our governance to reflect the diversity of our town helps create an environment where all feel welcome." The committee is planning a community forum for late October and will make a recommendation to the Board of Selectmen in November.
