Happy Tuesday, Bedford! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in Bedford today. First, today's weather: Mostly sunny today and breezy. High: 60. Tuesday night, cool. Low: 48. Here are the top stories in Bedford today: In a recent New Hampshire Journal podcast, Georgia's Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan talked about his newly released book, "GOP 2.0" and says why he believes that policy over politics can bring victory to the Republican party. There are lessons Republicans can learn from former President Trump, "both good and bad," that can help win future elections, said Duncan. A former pro baseball player who is now a legislator, Duncan previews his upcoming appearance at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. You can listen to the Podcast here: (Patch) The rapidly declining Monarch butterfly needs your help. New Hampshire residents, including residents of Bedford, are asked to collect milkweed pods from Sept. 15- Oct. 30, 2021, to save the Monarch butterfly that is rapidly heading toward extinction. NH Fish & Game and the UNH Cooperative Extension is asking New Hampshire residents to collect milkweed pods (but only after they are dry and have turned grey or brown, and the center seam pops with only gentle pressure). On their website, the Extension said to store the pods in paper bags, as plastic bags collect unwanted moisture. The seeds will be planted by the NH Department of Transportation in conservation corridors along highways with native perennials. The closest collection site for Bedford is on Mast Road in Goffstown. The milkweed plant is an essential food source and is the exclusive host plant for Monarch butterflies, and are disappearing rapidly due to loss of habitat, the use of pesticides and herbicides, and other factors. In the past twenty years Monarch butterfly populations have declined 80%, they said. You can find out more here: (UNH Cooperative Extension)Slow down, move over. New Hampshire State Police joined the New Hampshire DOT, the Bedford Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Towing Association on Saturday to bring attention to a law adopted in 2004 that requires drivers to "move over a lane or slow down" when approaching or passing an emergency situation or any road. Officials say that the law helps save lives. Bedford fire lieutenant Dave Sherwood said the department is often called for accidents on the Everett Turnpike saying, "It's dangerous." He added if people move over and slow down it makes make their jobs easier and safer. Eileen Meaney with New Hampshire DOT said that in the winter drivers run into the plow trucks. Officials and first responders also used National Move Over Day to remind drivers to put down cell phones and any other distractions to help keep us all safe. (WMUR Manchester) Not your typical Sunday drive. A car crashed into Blakes Ice Cream Restaurant in Manchester at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, apparently hopping the curb and crashing through a fence into the lobby. Surprised customers were in the restaurant at the time of the accident, and one man had to jump out of the way. The female driver and customers were not injured. One man exiting the restaurant had minor scrapes and bruises. MFD Battalion Chief Robert Beaudet said that damage to the restaurant was extensive, "particularly the entryway." Blakes will be closed until the restaurant can be repaired. (Patch) Today's Bedford Daily is brought to you by Ring, a Patch Brand Partner.
