Happy Sunday, Atlanta! Let's start today off on an informed note, shall we? Here's everything you need to know in Atlanta today. First, today's weather: Plenty of sunshine. High: 68 Low: 47. Here are the top stories today in Atlanta: 1. Rest in peace to Abu, the oldest giraffe in Zoo Atlanta. With concerns about his quality of life and a case of arthritis, the 16-year-old was put to sleep after a sharp decline in health. "This is a very sad day for Zoo Atlanta. Abu was very special to so many, both within the zoo team and among our members and guests," senior director of animal health Sam Rivera said. He fathered two calves — one in 2010, which was the first giraffe born at the zoo, and another in 2011 – after arriving at the zoo in 2007. The zoo has two other 10-year old males, Etana and Isooba. In a case of what Atlanta police described as "he said, she said," a Waffle House customer claimed that a waitress pulled a gun on him following his complaint about a food order. "She was like, she will blow my brains out," customer Candy Franklin said of a waitress identified as Angelic Patterson, according to FOX 5. The waitress has reportedly been charged with aggravated assault. "It all happened over cheese eggs," Franklin continued. "At first, they didn't bring them to me. Then they brought me normal eggs and I said that I ordered eggs with cheese on it. I tipped her and everything. It was all a normal dispute over food. I never in a million years thought it would come to gun violence." (Fox News) 3. It was a big opening game victory for the Atlanta Braves as Austin Riley cracked a ninth-inning, walk-off hit to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in the National League Championship Series. Playing in a sold-out Truist Park, Riley also banged a tying home run in the fourth inning. Atlanta starter Max Fried contained the Dodgers, giving up only two runs in six innings. The Braves clinched the spot in the NLCS last week by eliminating the Milwaukee Brewers while the Dodgers outlasted their California rival, the San Francisco Giants, on Thursday night. (MLB) 4. Atlanta residents may ask, "What's a Whataburger?" The answer could be coming soon as the famed Texas-based Whataburger chain opens its first store in metro Atlanta. Burgers and toppings like Hatch Green chiles, jalapeños, cheese, avocado and bacon are the culinary delights delivered by the chain. Additionally, you can chow down on breakfast burritos and other early-morning fare at 9766 Highway 92 in Marietta. The chain currently has one Georgia location near the Florida border in Thomasville. (Atlanta Business Journal) 5. The fight over cityhood for Buckhead heats up. On Monday, state lawmakers from Atlanta's legislative delegations will hold a press conference to "throw down the gauntlet" against Buckhead cityhood. The remark comes from State Sen. Nan Orrock, who said she wants to unite people to stop the "chaos" Buckhead secession would bring to bond ratings, school systems and more. She and other lawmakers said Republican legislators have made more progress with messaging and have connected with voters.
