Here are the top stories in Buffalo today: A contractor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has just finished nearly $5 million in repairs on the Buffalo North Breakwater. That's the long and vast stone breakwall essentially running 2,200 feet south from near the Bird Island Pier along the waterfront, protecting the Erie Basin Marina. Army Corps Project Manager Lex Barker said breakwalls are repaired with intricate giant stonework. Barker said there are likely to be more breaches, as storms on the Great Lakes become more frequent and more violent. (WBFO)Improved addiction and mental health services could soon be heading to facilities operated by the Erie County Sheriff's Office. In a committee meeting Thursday, the Erie County Legislature discussed a Medication Assisted Treatment Program. The program expands on the current program to offer more addiction and mental health treatment for detainees. The Erie County Corrections Specialist Advisory Board recommended the program last year. And now, the legislature, the Erie County Sheriff's Office, and the Department of Mental Health are all on board to make the program a reality. (WIVB.com - News 4) Thursday, advocates and elected leaders from Western New York came together to rally in support of Proposal 2, an environmental rights amendment to the state's constitution.
