Rhode Island's First WWII Monument To Be Dedicated This Weekend

WOONSOCKET, RI — Rhode Island's World War II veterans and civilian workers will be honored Sunday, October 17 with the dedication of a new memorial at American Legion Fairmount Post 85 in Woonsocket. The new memorial, funded by the Heritage Harbor Foundation, is Rhode Island's only World War II educational monument site to date. It will be celebrated with a Lighting of the Eternal Flame ceremony beginning at noon, followed by a formal site dedication with full military honors and a military flyover from 2 to 4 p.m. The ceremony will also feature military equipment displays, including a 1,000-square-foot tented World War II museum and a rubber tank built in Woonsocket by the Soldiers of Production for General Patton's "Ghost Army." Music for the event will be provided by the 88th Army Band and the full U.S. Navy Band and dinner will be free for all participants.
