Die Fledermaus (“The Bat”) is an comic operetta written by Johan Strauss, Jr. It premiered in Vienna in 1874.
Die Fledermaus (“The Bat”) is a prime example of the Golden Age of Viennese operetta,. It is appealing to all ages because of the beautfiful melodies and the fact that as audience members, we can identify with the characters. It is a great classic comedy, complete with disguise, intrigue, and mistaken identity.
This operetta tells the stories of real people rather than the kings, queens, and noblemen found in traditional operas. The characters in Die Fledermaus are people who, though perhaps better off financially than most, essentially live, dress, and act like the members of the audience who are observing them.
