WALTHAM, MA — Waltham Farmers' Market is seeking donations to its SNAP (Supplement Nutritional Assistance Program) Match program, which was established in 2012 to provide healthy, fresh, and affordable food to community members in need.
Each week, the Match program distributes an average of an extra $10 to over 75 households. The farmers' market currently has a fundraising goal of $17,000 and still needs $5,000 to reach that goal.
"While we will finish out the season with no interruption to the Match program, the allocated funds set aside for this year have been depleted and we've had to dip into our reserves," said Waltham Farmers' Market in an email to supporters. "Consequently, this leaves us starting out at a deficit next year which could impact our ability to sustain the program for the next season.
Individual donors contribute the highest percentage to SNAP Match, followed by churches and foundations, said farmers' market organizers. One hundred percent of all donations go toward the program and no funds are diverted to cover operation costs.
