NEW PORT RICHEY, FL — For the third time this month, a person has been killed while riding in a wheelchair on a Tampa Bay road. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, on Thursday at 4:36 p.m., a 79-year-old New Port Richey man was heading north on the shoulder of Rowan Road south of County Road 587 when he began to cross the road. An SUV driven by a 64-year-old New Port Richey man was heading north on Rowan Road when he struck the man in the wheelchair. The man was thrown out of the wheelchair. He was taken to the hospital where he died overnight. On Oct. 5, a man in a wheelchair was killed while trying to cross South Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa The same day, another man in a wheelchair died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on U.S. 19 North at Mainlands Drive in Pinellas Park.
