Two-Way Traffic To Return To Homer Street In Newton

NEWTON, MA — Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced Thursday that Homer Street will go back to two-way traffic within two to three weeks. The traffic pattern change was part of the library parking lot enhancement project, which began earlier this year and required changing Homer Street traffic flow to one-way to provide space for parking during renovation. "I know the change to one-way was frustrating for many of us who use Homer, Comm Ave and Walnut Street in this area (including me)," said Fuller in a community update. "While it was helpful for the past six months, we're all glad to have it permanently re-opened in both directions." The switch to one-way traffic in front of the Newton Free Library allowed DPW officials to install the new solar carport panels, which are now operational and provide the equivalent of 49 percent of the library's electricity. Although work on the library's parking lot is not complete, the rest can be done without the additional spaces on Homer Street, said the mayor. Upcoming construction includes storm drainage work and repaving, which will be completed in sections next spring.
