CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs may have some rebuilding to do before they are back in contention for another championship, but they have added an important piece to their front office. The Cubs announced Friday that Carter Hawkins, the assistant general manager for the Cleveland Indians, has been named the team's general manager. Hawkins, 37, fills a gap left by the promotion of President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer after Theo Epstein stepped down from the position. Hawkins will be formally introduced as a news conference on Monday at Wrigley Field. "I am thrilled to bring Carter into our organization," Hoyer said in a statement Friday. "He has earned a fantastic reputation as a leader through hard work, open-mindedness, humility and intelligence. I enjoyed getting to know him throughout the interview process, and it quickly became clear that we share the same passion for team building. I look forward to partnering with him to build the next great Cubs team." Hawkins spent 14 years in Cleveland, including the past five as the team's assistant general manager. He was involved in all aspects of baseball operations, including player and staff procurement and development, negotiations, rules and administration and player personnel decisions at the major and minor league levels, the Cubs said in a news release. Hawkins also oversaw the Indians Player Development Department and ensured that the vision of the department align with those of the organization. Entering the 2021-22 offseason, Cleveland has five players included in MLB.com's top 100 prospects list, which tied for the most among major league teams. The Cubs will have major work to do in the offseason after trading away key players Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez at the trade deadline. The Cubs, who were atop the National League Central Division before an 11-game losing streak, struggled for the remainder of the season and finished in fourth place with a 71-91 record. Prior to his promotion to Assistant General Manager, Hawkins was named Cleveland's Director of Player Development in 2015 after serving as Assistant Director of Player Development starting in 2010. He had a full-time role in Professional Scouting in 2009 and began his tenure with Cleveland in 2008 as the Advance Scouting Intern. Hawkins is a former college catcher at Vanderbilt, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2007.
