CHICAGO — State police and officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation warned drivers they will be shutting down all lanes of inbound Dan Ryan Expressway at 76th Street to investigate reports of an earlier shooting. The shutdown was announced at 5 p.m. Thursday. Traffic officials said motorists can expect heavy traffic and delays throughout the South Side as a result. Officials from Illinois State Police did not say how long inbound lanes would be closed. Originally, IDOT listed the reason for closures as a crash but later said a shooting investigation was taking place. "Things are not nice on the inbound Dan Ryan Expwy (westbound I-94) because of a crash at 69th Street," the agency wrote in a social media statement. As of 5:30 p.m., troopers said they were stationed near the 71st Street exit. Officials would not say if the shots were fired on the expressway or near it. The closure comes after a Wednesday night shooting on the Dan Ryan Expressway which took place near 69th Street at around 8:45 p.m.
