CHICAGO — Officer Carlos Yanez Jr. left a rehab facility in downtown Chicago Thursday, over two months after he was shot in the line of duty in early August. Yanez was injured in the same shooting that claimed the life of his partner, Officer Ella French, during a traffic stop in West Englewood. A crowd of police, family and other supporters gathered outside of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab to see Yanez come out shortly before 11 a.m. Bagpipes, officers and even a mariachi band greeted Yanez as he was escorted to a limousine. The 39-year-old officer was taken home in a wheelchair. According to family members, Yanez is partially paralyzed and also lost an eye as a result of the shooting. He still has two bullets lodged in his head. Yanez, father of a 3-year-old boy, has a long road of recovery ahead of him, Chicago police officials said. He was shot three times during the Aug. 7 traffic stop that turned into a gun battle near 63rd Street and Bell Avenue. Two brothers, Emonte and Eric Morgan, have been charged in connection with the shooting. They are currently being held without bail.
