BOLINGBROOK, IL — The Bolingbrook Police Department will participate in the Illinois Department of Transportation's Halloween Campaign, which steps up enforcement of occupant protection laws to help ensure the safety of passengers in cars traveling in Bolingbrook, the department said.
The campaign starts Saturday, and will run through Oct. 31, according to the department.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 9,466 unbuckled passengers killed in crashes in 2019. An early study for 2020 suggests that during the COVID-19 public health emergency, driving patterns and behaviors changed significantly, and there was more risky behavior from those drivers who remained on the road, including not wearing seat belts.
The Halloween enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the department said.
