TPD confirmed the shooting happened at approximately 6:20 p.m. and no suspects have been taken into custody. The child was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's a senseless murder," said TPD Chief Brent Blankley to local media Friday night. "We see it all the time where adults are shot and it's terrible, but when it's a kid it takes it to another level ... We're all Dads and Moms out here. When you see that and see the senseless tragedy of that, it hits you different."
The investigation is now being handled by the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.
The victim has not been identified at this time.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Friday evening, Captain Marty Sellers initially confirmed the investigation on Washington Square was indeed related to a homicide. However, he declined to provide any further information as the investigation was in its early phases.
This is a developing story. Tuscaloosa Patch will have more as details come available.
