Create a Simple Cutting Board and Gain Confidence on Wood Shop Tools
In this class, you will make a simple cutting board from a piece of rough-milled, hard maple. In the process, you will learn to use four of the most basic machines in the wood shop: the table saw, the jointer/planer, the router and the drum sander. You will also use a hand-held power sander. When the piece is complete, you will apply a coat of suitable oil which can be refreshed at home as needed.
Cost: $60, materials included. Pay $10 now to reserve your spot. The rest is payable to the the instructor at class (cash, check or card)
Age: Adults
Instructor: Dave Peterson grew up working in a manufacturing company that made steel components for farm and construction machinery. After college, he wandered off into academics for a few years before returning to the factory as general manager/owner. When he retired, he took up wood turning, the craft of making round things out of wood: bowls, platters, candle-holders, vases, etc.
Note: Some of these machines are noisy and produce chips and saw dust. You will need to bring your own safety glasses, dust mask and hearing protection. All of these can be purchased at Menard's. Please note that your regular glasses are do probably not quality as "safety" glasses. You can use goggles or a face shield over your regular glasses. If you only need glasses for close-up work (if you're myopic), you can buy safety classes with built-in lenses for close work. These are available on-line or at Rockler in Burnsville. Check their inventory before you drive up there.
