SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — A 75-year-old inmate died in custody at Sarasota Memorial Hospital Tuesday night, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office shared on Facebook.
William Arthur Byron, who has been in custody of the Sarasota County Correctional Facility since April on charges from the North Port Police Department, died just before 10 p.m.
According to court records, he was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, battery and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon.
During his stay at the correctional facility, Byron experienced several medical issues and was transported several times to receive medical and end-of-life care. He was housed in the medical wing of the facility for the majority of his stay, the sheriff's office said.
Byron was bonded at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, and just prior to his physical release from custody, he was brought to the hospital again.
Based on medical history and a preliminary investigation, detectives believe Byron died from terminal medical issues, the sheriff's office said. An official cause of death will come from the Medical Examiner's Office.
