ST. CHARLES, IL — A District 303 school board member has stepped down from her post after experiencing "unrelenting harassment" from the community during her tenure. In a statement, Carolyn Waibel said the harassment comes at a "volatile time in our district, community, state and country" but also said she feels District 303 officials should take more proactive measures to ensure school board members safety. "Someone has harassed me in my face walking into meetings when I was on a walker, I've had dead animals thrown into my driveway, my house has been vandalized, I've been followed and videotaped in a grocery store shopping with my son, my home was broken into, my car was vandalized and these people continue to libel me," Waibel said during the public comments portion of Tuesday's school board meeting. In a letter posted on the District 303 website, Waibel talked about her accomplishments while on the board and thanked those who've supported her. "The most valued part of my tenure are the relationships I have built while on the board and involved in the district," she wrote. In a letter to parents, District 303 school board president Jillian Parker thanked Waibel for her time on the board. District 303 is now accepting applications for those interested in filling Waibel's seat on the school board. More information on how to apply for the school board can be found here.
