POTTSTOWN, PA — A 15-year-old Pottstown student was shot Wednesday afternoon and taken to the hospital, Pottstown Police reported.
The shooting happened in the 100 block of N. Evan Street, according to a police report. Officer arrived in the area of N. Evans and Beech streets when the shooting was reported around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers on the scene reported that the teenager was shot one time in the buttock and that the victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
Pottstown Police Chief Mick Markovich confirmed the victim was a student in the Pottstown School District.
Markovich said early reports to detectives said that two groups of teenage boys were involved in an altercation in the area, when one of the males pulled out a handgun and fired two shots. One shot hit a parked car on N. Evans Street and the other round struck the teenage victim.
Police said two .22 caliber empty shell casings were recovered from the scene.
The Pottstown Police Department Detectives are investigating. Anyone with information should call 610-970-6570.
Markovich said on Thursday there was no new information to report.
On Thursday Pottstown High School Principal Danielle McCoy announced to the school community that a search was conducted at Pottstown High School, though the statement did not specify if the search was in response to the shooting incident.
"No dangerous items were found. Safety is a primary concern of the Pottstown School District. Periodically, searches are done as a means of assuring that safety. We will continue to provide the safest environment possible and appreciate your collaboration in these efforts," McCoy said.
