AURORA, IL — Downtown Aurora will come alive with Day of the Dead festivities as Sugar Skull City returns for the second year Friday. Through Nov. 5, the three-week celebration honors the popular Mexican culture tradition and highlights Hispanic-owned businesses in the area. More than 40 businesses downtown, including Altiro Latin Fusion, Creaciones Morelos and Simply Destinee, will be decorated for the holiday, and local artists are painting the storefronts. Sugar Skull City will feature alebrijes — submitted by two dozen local artists and students — for its downtown-wide scavenger hunt. The festivities include Aurora Public Art installing an alebrije mural on the BNSF viaduct, under the railroad bridge east of Broadway Street, along New York Street. The Santori Public Library will also display ofrendas, or altars, where people can honor the dead. Several stores, such as Bella Jewelry, at 23 N. Broadway St., and La Central Bakery, located at 110 E. Galena Boulevard, will also have them on display. The celebrations will continue virtually as well. A tutorial on making a sugar skull, an Aztec dance ceremony and more will be available for viewing on the Aurora Downtown Facebook page and YouTube channel. Pan de Muerto, or "Bread of the Dead," will be baked and ready at a few spots downtown: Altiro Latin Fusion, 1 S. Stolp Ave.; La France Bakery, 118 E. Galena Boulevard; and La Central Bakery. Various stores will also have Day of the Dead items for sale, including fresh flowers at Blissful Blooms, located at 55 S. Lake St. Sugar Skull City totes and artisan items can be found at Wyckwood House, 14 W. Downer Place, and at The Cotton Seed Creative Exchange, 8 N. Broadway St. (For more news and information like this, subscribe to the Aurora Patch for free.
