TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa Academy could be one step closer to entering the realm of public school athletics, following numerous media reports that the private school will leave the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) in favor of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The story was first reported by Jerell Rushing of the Tuscaloosa News and then by Ben Thomas of AL.com, who both said the announcement was made during the AHSAA's Fall Central Board meeting on Thursday. School officials contacted by Patch have yet to confirm or deny the news, but rumblings have been ongoing for some time about a potential departure from the AISA, where TA is among the larger competitors. Patch has confirmed, however, that the decision has not yet been approved by a vote of the Tuscaloosa Academy Board of Trustees, which represents the next major step in the process. Private schools competing within the public school ranks is not uncommon practice in athletics, especially in Tuscaloosa, where both American Christian Academy and Holy Spirit Catholic School are participating members of the AHSAA.
