Ritual Arts (Mitzvah) Series (select workshops)Havdalah Candle MakingHavdalah, the multisensory ceremony, plays a central role in Jewish culture and tradition. This workshop zones into the secrets behind each of the important components of the service and concludes with a candle-making experience. Participants dip long wicks into hot beeswax and watch in awe as the wax hardens and creates the traditional braided Havdalah candle. The light of the Havdalah candle is reflected in their eyes as this popular ritual comes to life. Torah UnwrappedThousands of years before it found its way to a printing press, the handwritten Torah scroll was at the heart of Judaism. It can still be found, in its same form, as the focal point of any Jewish center around the globe. Participants will immerse themselves in the history of written expression and experience the magic of taking something seemingly unusable and transforming it into an enduring object of teaching and inspiration. The Art of Writing demonstrates how the written word can go hand-in-hand with the recycling process. In a fast-paced, digital age where the handwritten note- turned keepsake has become increasingly rare, this workshop seeks to transform our throw-away attitudes into ones that value reuse, and appreciate authentic communication and the power of the written word. The Mezuzah WorkshopThe Mezuzah workshop provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into what's involved in the production of the ancient scroll. Following an explanation of the inscription inside the Mezuzah and what it means for the people inside the home, the audience learns some fascinating facts and gets the opportunity to examine the parchment up, close, and personal. Using special tools, participants engrave their custom design and name into a copper slate which will later be inserted into a brass case. The end result is beautiful! The Holiday SeriesThe Matzah FactoryHistory comes alive in the Matzah Factory as students step into a time machine and travel back to the sand dunes of Egypt. Unleavened bread played a central role in the Hebrews’ liberation from Egypt. The workshop explores ancient techniques in creating unleavened dough from scratch while teaching children how to find the silver lining in adversity, the importance of humility, and how to give thanks in any situation. The Olive PressThis immersive experience is designed to capture a child’s imagination as it depicts the struggle for tolerance in the face of oppression. As students learn the art of making olive oil, they discover why standing up for every person’s right to express their individuality is a truly pressing matter. The Shofar FactoryParticipants are encouraged to experiment with different kinds of trumpets and horns and interpret the messages that the horn sounds release. The audience partakes in the sawing, drilling, finishing, and shellacking of a shofar. In addition, the children practice the four different shofar sounds on their newly fashioned shofar and have the option to take home their own hand-crafted finished product. The JScience Series (select workshops)The Science of Motion–Chanukah This workshop explores a host of science experiments related to themes and messages of Chanukah. Newton's Laws of Motion, Angular Motion, a Century-Old Gyroscope, and the combustion triangle, come to life and find their way into the ancient story of one of the most celebrated Jewish holidays. Get your tickets today! Our Environment—Tu B’shvat, Birthday of the TreesThe Tu B’shvat, Trees, and our Environment workshop opens children’s eyes to the wonders of the world around them, and the responsibility we have to protect our natural resources from harm. Participants discover how their everyday habits and actions can make a difference, and learn to see themselves as caretakers of the planet that G-d has created.
