Description

Echotheque's Aylesworth Suite: A Sonic Preservation Project Please join us for a cross-disciplinary presentation and listening-party for Echotheque’s newly released Aylesworth Suite. Echotheque is a band formed by two brothers, Brent and Grant Helzer, both of whom graduated as CSU English majors. They utilize methods from multiple disciplines—historic preservation, experimental music composition, literary theory, and more—in order to preserve in music a building demolished in 2019. That building is Aylesworth Hall, opened in 1958 as student housing, and named for CSU's fourth president Barton O. Aylesworth. Despite its designation as a dormitory, Aylesworth Hall became a "catch all" building for anything the university needed a place for, and for many years, served as both dormitory and a space for various departments. In 1972, Aylesworth Hall was approved for permanent academic use and housed numerous departments and offices. Though Aylesworth Hall no longer stands, Brent and Grant have found a way to preserve the building. They’ll explain their inspirations, their love of the under-loved Aylesworth Hall among them, and give us the how-to explanation of how this music was made, utilizing the building itself as primary instrument. Please join us on October 27th, 2021 in celebrating this historic building that was home to so many through the years and enjoy the sounds of Aylesworth Hall.
