Pier to pier run/walk between Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach on November 7 in support of Boğaziçi University Pier to Pier Run from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach Pier in support of Boğaziçi University for a free and autonomous University. Students, faculty members and Alumni from Boğaziçi University are joining the Istanbul Marathon on November 7 to make their voices heard. TWI has started a Sparks program at Boğaziçi University for young Boğaziçi women. Please come join us on November 7 at Manhattan Beach Pier to run/Walk in solidarity with our fellow Boğaziçi community in Istanbul. Boğaziçi’liler özgür ve özerk üniversite taleplerini görünür kılmak, öğrenci, hoca, mezun ve çalışanlar olarak yine barışçıl ve renkli bir etkinlikle, ama bu sefer kampüs dışında, şehrin cadde ve sokaklarında farkındalık yaratmak için 43. İstanbul Maratonu’na katılıyorlar. Biz de TWI olarak hepinizi dünyanın öbür ucundan Boğaziçi'ne destek olmaya çağırıyoruz. Gelin Boğaziçi Mezunları, Boğaziçi ebeveynleri veya özerk üniversiteyi destekleyen herkes… Biz de onlara destek olarak Los Angeles’ta destek koşusu yapalım. TWI bu sene Boğaziçi Üniversitesinde bir Kıvılcımlar grubu başlatıyor. Koşunun geliri bu Kıvılcımlar grubun kurulmasına yardım edecek. Bütün katılımcılara İstanbul maratonundaki katılımcıların giyeceği aşağıdaki tshirt’un eşi tshirt’ler verilecektir. The Turkish Women’s Initiative(TWI) is a U.S.-based nonprofit that provides innovative, practical, and sustainable career and leadership programs for women. Founded in 2008, its mission is to develop women’s confidence, courage and belief in their skills and abilities – so that they are equipped to reach their own highest goals and to serve as role models for others. Program in Turkey Sparks is a TWI-developed program designed for university women of low and modest means to develop confidence, leadership skills and experience in social responsibility. Many are from small villages and the first in their families to overcome formidable economic, social and cultural challenges to attend college. While many Turkish scholarship programs help young women fund university, financial assistance is only part of what’s needed for them to graduate and succeed. Sparks’ unique 8-month experiential program supports students and builds the skills needed for them to complete their education and go on to post-graduate work and employment in their chosen fields. While only about 32% of women in Turkey who enroll in university actually graduate, the percentage for Sparks women is close to 100%.   “Before Sparks, I thought my success would be in just one area – science. Through the Sparks social change project and other things I learned, I realize that I can be a success in many fields.”        – Zehra, 2018 Sparks graduate, now engaged in post-graduate biochemistry program with focus in neurological tissue engineering Programs in the U.S. Ignite is a TWI-developed program for immigrant professional women from any country, new to the U.S. and eager to network, “learn the ropes” culturally, and start careers here.  Stories of Courageis the dramatic reading of true stories, told in first person, that portray typical, real-life challenges that women face in reaching their dreams of education and career. The stories are developed, staged, and presented as inspiration and encouragement to audiences of women – and men – to remain steadfast in their resolve.
