LAKEVILLE, MA — A passing driver stopped to check in and assist crash victims after seeing a car wreck in the woods in Lakeville Monday. Lakeville Fire Department took to Facebook to thank Yanire Mendes, the woman who stayed and comforted the 4-year-old still strapped into her car seat inside the car. Firefighters responded to the single-car crash on route 140, just north of the Country Street exit just after 4:30 p.m. Firefighters say the car left the highway, crashing into several trees before stopping. Emergency crews say the driver was ejected from the car and sustained significant injuries. The 4-year-old passenger was properly secured in her car seat and escaped without being injured. Mendes was driving by and saw the scene, immediately jumping out of her car to see how she could help. She found the child and comforted her until the ambulance crews got there to take over. The child was in shock, and firefighters say Mendes was able to calm her, even able to get her smiling and laughing at one point. The driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance. There is no word on the extent of the driver's injuries.
