NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A brief reign of terror is over after a man repeatedly threatened people on the street near the same corner and mugged a delivery driver, New Rochelle police said. The trouble started on Monday at about 9:30 a.m., when police were called to the corner of Drake Ave. and John St. for reports of a robbery. A delivery driver told police he was menaced with a knife, assaulted and robbed of a neck chain by a man who had already fled the scene. Shortly after noon the same day, the victim reported that he returned to the location to get his truck and the same suspect accosted him and punched him in the face. A bystander, who attempted to intervene, was also assaulted by the suspect who again ran off before police arrived. Early the next morning, the same suspect was back at it again, police said. NRPD said he once again made threats to a person on the street near the same intersection. Police were called again but the suspect had already fled the scene. This time, however, police were told that the suspect ran into a nearby residence. Authorities set up a perimeter and the New Rochelle Police Critical Incident Unit was called in to help. The suspect, later identified as Larry Lopez, tried to escape out of a basement window, but was quickly caught. The 29-year-old New Rochelle man was charged with felony robbery, felony grand larceny, misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor menacing.
