MARBLEHEAD, MA — Twenty-eight months after Marblehead voters approved a new elementary school for the town, the Lucretia and Joseph Brown School opened its doors to students for the first time Wednesday morning. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Sunday to celebrate the opening. The public is invited to the event that is scheduled to run from 2 to 4 p.m. Superintendent John Buckey told Patch in August the opening of the new school would be "a celebration of our community's support of public education." The new school was approved by a town vote of 3,440 to 1,976 in June 2019. "Please be mindful of additional students and vehicles in the area; be careful, have patience and use caution; respect the neighborhood and expect delays," town officials urged. It is named after Joseph and Lucretia Brown, who operated a tavern in town after John served in the Revolutionary War. The couple lived on Gingerbread Hill from about 1790 to their deaths in 1834 and 1857, respectively. Did you find this article useful? Invite a friend to subscribe to Patch.
