Written by Sue Martinez HERNDON, VA — Over 2,100 fans cheered for 24 Fairfax and Loudoun High School area marching bands competing throughout the day at the 24th Annual Showcase of Bands on September 25th. The event was held at and hosted by Herndon High School. After an 18 months pause in group practice due to covid restrictions, the students had worked hard to be ready for the year's first competition. Attendees enjoyed thrilling musical programs showcased by colorful backlit banners, pirate ships and roaring cannon props as well as the choreography of color guards as they spun flags in beautifully themed costumes. Winners are sorted per their group size. First prize trophies were proudly awarded to the following bands: Group 1 – Rock Ridge High School, Ashburn VirginiaGroup 2 – South County High school, Lorton VirginiaGroup 3 – Oakton High School, Oakton VirginiaGroup 4 – James Madison High School, Vienna VirginiaGroup 5 – McLean High School, McLean Virginia Herndon HS Band Director, Ms. Jacoby, was pleased to host the dignitaries at the event who also participated in the awards ceremonies. The visiting dignitaries included Town of Herndon Council members Signe Friedrich and Pradip Dhakal, Fairfax County School Board Vice Chair Rachna Sizemore Heizer, Fairfax County At-Large School Board Member Karen Keys-Gamarra, Fairfax County School Board member Melanie Meren and FCPS Music Educational Specialist Katrina D Chaney. The day's host, Herndon High School's Pride of Herndon's Marching Band concluded the event to roaring applause marching to music from How to Train your Dragon.
