STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Three men were arrested after a high-speed chase onto I-95 in Stafford County. Authorities claimed that the men fled from authorities after they attempted to steal a car. The incident began at Anytime Fitness on Tech Parkway in Stafford County, police said. Deputies responded to the scene around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Multiple callers told authorities that three men were attempting to steal a man's car. "Once on scene, deputies learned the suspects had approached the victim wielding a wooden stick and struck him several times in an attempt to steal his car," the sheriff's office wrote on Facebook. "The victim, trained in mixed martial arts, fought back against the attackers." At one point, one of the attackers acquired the victim's keys and entered the car. However, he was unable to drive the car due to its manual transmission, police said. Eventually, gymgoers in the area came to the victim's aid, according to the sheriff's office. The suspects fled the area in their own car. Later, a Stafford County deputy saw the suspects' car, a white Acura sedan with Mississippi license plates, on Garrisonville Road near I-95. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the sedan began to flee northbound on I-95, authorities said. "Near the 145 mile marker, the suspects entered the HOV lanes by crashing through the barrier arm and began driving northbound while traffic was headed southbound," the sheriff's office said. "Miraculously, there was no accident and the suspects stopped on their own at the 147 mile marker." The sheriff's office said the pursuit reached 98 miles per hour. After stopping their car, the suspects fled on foot into the wooded median between the HOV and southbound lanes of I-95, according to authorities. A Stafford County Sheriff's Office K-9 arrived on the scene and located the suspects. Two of the suspects were taken into custody without further incident. A third suspect attempted to flee, but was apprehended by a police K-9 within 50 yards, police said. He was "briefly" taken to a hospital to receive treatment for the dog bite, according to the sheriff's office. The suspects, who are 18, 19, and 20 years old, are being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. They face charges including carjacking, robbery, and vandalism. One of the men is charged with malicious wounding and assault, while another was charged with eluding, reckless driving, and hit and run.
