SPOTSYLVANIA, VA — A woman from Spotsylvania County was charged with the murder of her son, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday. The four-month-old child died of "severe malnourishment" earlier this month, according to an autopsy. The child died at the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center on Oct. 2, police said. The medical examiner notified detectives about the death, and the Child Victim Unit began an investigation. "The investigation revealed that the infant's mother brought the child to the hospital who was found to be unresponsive and not breathing," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "Life saving measures were administered by hospital staff and the child was pronounced dead at 6:11PM." The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the child. They determined that the cause of death was severe malnourishment and neglect. The child's death was then ruled a homicide, police said. The child's mother, who police identified as Nubia Williams, was charged with second degree murder and felony child neglect. She was arrested on Tuesday and is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. The CDC hosts an array of resources to prevent child neglect, and to help victims who had adverse childhood experiences. More information is available on their website. Have a story idea?
