CONCORD, NH — Concord fire and rescue teams were sent to the Steeplegate Mall on Wednesday to assist a man who fell into a storm drain. Around 7 a.m., firefighters were sent to a call on Sheep Davis Road for what Chief Sean Brown called "a technical rescue response." The man, not far from the mall, fell about 20 feet down into the drain after walking over it. The drain, Brown said, did not have a cover on it. "Companies arrived on scene and initiated rescue operations," he said. "Personnel used hazardous materials meters to ensure that there was adequate oxygen in the confined space and to check for the presence of hydrogen sulfide or other sewer gases. A firefighter using self-contained breathing apparatus accessed the patient with a fire department ladder." A harness and safety line were attached to the man and then, firefighters assisted him in climbing up the ladder. "Once removed, the patient was further evaluated and declined transportation to the hospital," Brown said. It is unknown why the drain was uncovered but firefighters replaced the cover before clearing the call, he said. Got a news tip? Send it to [email protected].
