JOLIET, IL —Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow announced that 49-year-old Joliet resident Marcus Heckard received an eight-year prison sentence this week after pleading guilty to attempted murder. Heckard's crime happened more than three years ago inside the Speedway gas station on Plainfield Road in Crest Hill, prosecutors noted. "We will not tolerate this sort of violence in Will County," Glasgow said in Wednesday's news release. "This repeat offender has been in and out of prison for more than two decades with multiple prior felonies. Sadly, this scourge on society has chosen the path of criminal conduct instead of being a contributing member of the community." In late July, 2018, Heckard attacked a customer inside the Speedway, pulling out a retractable steel baton from his backpack. Heckard struck his victim with the baton, first on the legs and then the head after the victim fell to the floor, while yelling at the victim that he was going to kill him, Glasgow noted. When the victim got back up, Heckard again swung the baton and threw hot coffee at the victim from coffee pots inside the convenience store. Heckard's past criminal convictions include aggravated battery, armed violence, domestic battery, and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, Glasgow's staff noted. He will receive credit for 1,171 days served. Heckard, who lived in the 1400 block of Burry Street, has remained in the Will County Jail since his arrest by Crest Hill police July 29, 2018.
