DETROIT — Stellantis' FCA responded to state regulators Monday with a letter saying it has made changes to its Detroit factory on Mack Avenue. The facility was cited by The Michigan Department of Environment and Great Lakes Energy Department for an air quality violation after investigations found a strong paint/solvent odor coming from the new jeep plant. The automaker said it will routinely track emission levels "several times a day," as well as keeping its west-side doors shut at all times when not in use. It also upgraded its paint shop to minimize odors and alert operators if conditions are normal. Live in Detroit? "FCA is monitoring the painting process equipment very closely to identify any operating conditions which might cause odors to escape into the general building atmosphere and potentially be discharged through the building ventilation system," Mack plant manager Michael Brieda said in a letter Monday to EGLE's Air Quality Division. The automaker also said it has hired an engineering firm to investigate the origins of the strong paint odor residents have complained of smelling. "Potential odor causing operations, migration pathways and conditions, dispersion, and even how receptors respond to odors, is an extremely complex phenomenon which is impacted by numerous variables that can make identification and appropriate corrective actions challenging," Brieda said.
