Lease ended but they charged me 9 more months

Sept 2020 my lease was set to expire at the end of the month. I was arrested 2 weeks before it expired. My leasing company had my checking account of automatic payments. The lease ended while I sat in jail for 12 months but the leasing company continued to charge me because technically leases convert to "month-to-month" status automatically when they end. The leasing company will not refund me for the 9 months of rent I paid after my lease expired. My lease documents didn't mention anything at all about a month-to-month conversion, so I feel its unfair.
